Some pictures

Just a few random pictures of Ethan. They're in no particular order, although the first one is the most recent.

The Non-sleeping Wonder Baby

Ethan has decided to give up naps.  Perhaps its for some great cause but his mother is not convinced.  Poor little guy will be all red and puffy eyed, but still refuse to sleep more than 10 minutes or so.  Melanie, his sitter, told me that when her first baby went through a phase like that she called the doctor because she was sure her little girl's back was hurting, so that is my new joke :)

Awesomely enough though, he's not been terribly cranky and he's sleeping at night just wonderfully.  Last night I got brave and moved him into his bassinet about midnight after I let him nurse to sleep.  He woke up, but must have gone back to sleep because the next thing I knew it was almost 5 am and Ethan was just starting to stir.  Hooray.  I certainly don't mind having him in the bed, but I sleep a little better when he's not, and Darrell definitely does - he worries a lot that he's going to roll over and hurt the baby.

Let's see if naps make a come-back.  I'm hoping they do - not because I don't want to hang out with my little guy though.  Sometimes when he sleeps too long I actually start to miss him!  I've started putting him in the sling so I can get a little done around the house.  It limits what I can do somewhat, but last night I got most of the laundry put away.  Seriously, that's a big accomplishment!

SNOW DAYS!

I love snow days. Yep, adults get them too. Both of our jobs were closed on Tuesday, and then Wednesday had delayed opening and we decided to play it safe and stay home.

Chilling out at home with my baby and husband was awesome. Aside from a little homework I don't think we got anything constructive done. For some reason we watched the Food Network non-stop (we've never watched it together before... how strange) which inspired a few snack foods for the SuperBowl party, and some very interesting conversations.

I took yesterday morning off and let Darrell and Ethan hang together. I didn't plan it that way, but Darrell started taking care of him and they were getting along so well that I just let them keep at it, even letting Darrell give Ethan a bottle. It's funny because Ethan is getting so personable. Every time Darrell would pick him up he would start cooing and talking. Monday night he actually started to laugh when Darrell was playing with him. It was the first time as far as I know and SO cute. Everything that little boy does melts my heart and his laughter was no exception.

For some reason, Ethan decided to take a sabatical from napping yesterday. He wasn't cranky, but everytime he would fall asleep it only lasted for a few minutes before he was up and at 'em again. His little eyes were all red and puffy yet he refused to sleep.

Today we left a little earlier than the usual time but faired pretty well on the still-icy side streets with only a little slipping and sliding. The main roads were clear though, so it wasn't bad.

I have not...

...given up on blogging!

I've just been busy. Between going back to work, trying to concentrate on my MBA and getting some very important big news that I can't announce officially on the blog yet, my life has been full. Add to that a very energetic 10 week old baby and it's a recipe for keeping mommy far away from the computer. At least for long enough to compose a coherent blog.

Last week was Ethan's 2 month doctor visit. He weighed in at 13.5 lbs and 24 inches long. That puts him in the 70-90th percentile according to the doctor. I'm not surprised. He has outgrown all of his 0-3 month sleepers and is wearing the 3-6 month ones with little room to spare. Most of his two peice outfits are still fitting him, but he'll be moving up a size in those soon too.

He got three shots at his appointment - we're going to do a little bit delayed vaccination schedule so he doesn't get as many shots at a time.

It's sleeting today, and the roads are icy. Darrell had a minor accident this morning when the car went sliding into a curb, but thankfully he's okay. I'm at work and probably going to leave about 3:00 ... I'm not so nervous about driving myself but I'm worried about picking the baby up. Being a parent complicates things so much.

8 Weeks old

I have been reminded that my blogging activity is on the decline lately. I certainly don't deny it. Why it was easier to get a blog post written when Ethan was only a few weeks old than it is now I have no idea. It's not that there isn't anything to say, it's just hard to find time to say it.

Growing:
It's amazing how much Ethan has changed in 8 weeks. He is talking a lot these days, doing his little cooing and gooing noises. He's become much more interested in his toys and will lie on the floor and look at whatever I put around him for quite a while if he's in the right mood. He will lay on his tummy or his back, but doesn't seem to have even the slightest interest in rolling over yet. A couple of days ago I bought him a little play mat, with the bar that goes accross the top so he can lay on his back and look up at the toys. He seemed to get a kick out of it.

When I went to the doctor a week ago I stood on the scale with him and estimated that he weighs about 12 lbs.

Sleeping:
Ethan is still sleeping with us at night, although I'd like to get him starting out in his bassinet soon, then I'll be fine with him moving to the bed with us after a few hours. In general he's a good sleeper though - he usually wakes up around 2:30 and again around 5:30 when Darrell is leaving for the gym. I'm back to work this week so we'll see if the new schedule affects his sleep habits.

Up to this point he hasn't shown much interest in his little swing but I started putting him in it when he falls asleep and it's working great. He sleeps so much better in the swing, and a few times I've put him in it when he was drowsy and he just drifted off. I'm not in a huge hurry to make him learn to go to sleep by himself but it's definitely nice.

Back to work:
The daycare lady that I had found for Ethan "fired" us on the Friday before I was supposed to return to work. She watched Ethan for a few hours on Wednesday and decided that she couldn't handle it. Granted, he wasn't taking a bottle very well, but she was kind of insulting when she called and basically said he was spoiled and was going to want to be held all the time and they couldn't do that. Um... duh. Isn't that what all 8 week old babies want? Anyway, it was a mad scramble to find daycare but through a series of events I was referred to Melanie and her daughter Amber who are starting up their daycare again after taking a bit of a hiatus. It's funny because all during the week before as I was thinking about taking Ethan to the other lady I was stressing about it and kept wishing that he could go to someone who didn't have a bunch of other kids to take care of. Well, Ethan was the first baby they have taken so he's 'it' right now.

When we arrived yesterday morning I was still pretty nervous because I wasn't sure how Ethan would do, and if he'd take a bottle. So I hung around almost an hour and nursed him before I left. I was comforted by the fact that she asked if I minded if she cuddled with Ethan a lot and even held him while he slept. Of course I didn't mind a bit... A couple hours after I got to work I called once to check on him and he was sleeping but finally Melanie called me and let me know that Ethan had woken up, and taken the bottle just fine. I was so relieved! When we picked him up he seemed generally content and not at all traumatized. He was really clingy all evening though, and nursed constantly up until bedtime so he probably did not drink as much from the bottle as he normally would nursing at home. That's okay but I hope that he decides to go ahead and start eating a little more during the day - I barely got away to fix myself something to eat last night.
